Left Bangkok on a miserable 9 hour bus ride (The pictures looked so comfortable in the travel agency until I got on). The boat ride to Koh Tao was the worst I have ever took with the boat constantly going up and down and you couldn't walk onboard without tripping and falling. I got sea sick from the constant motion and felt trapped on a "salt and pepper shaker" ride unable to leave for 2 hours and basically puked the whole time I was onboard for the full 2 hours. I have decided not to drink for awhile after that experience.
After reading my LP guide I realized Koh Tao is basically a diving resort without much else to offer so instead of getting off and carrying my bags to find accommodation I decided to stay on for the trip to Koh Phangan which I have heard many good things about. I basically hid when they went around checking tickets. "Operation: FREE RIDE" was a success!!
I checked into a beach bungalow for $8US and rented a 125cc motorbike to get me around the island. I saw the funniest thing when I came into Haad Rin (Which is the party town) I saw a young women trying to turn her scooter around on the road when she panicked and gave the scooter full throttle and I watched her go full speed through the doors of a store and knock down some postcard stands and a shelf of goods. I wanted to ask if she was OK but had to pull over to wipe the tears of laughter from my eyes. Apparently she was ok and apologizing to the store owner as she began picking up everything she knocked over. As I left the town I went by the store and she was still picking up things and I saw the store owner laughing as he was explaining to a passerby what happened. I think she is an "Evel Knievel" wannabe.
In Thailand they drive on the left hand side of the road like in England. I sometimes forget that until I see a truck heading towards me. It feels odd going around corners in the left lane. I think I am going to stay in Koh Phangan island for a week and then take the one hour ferry to Ko Samui and stay there a week too. They have full moon parties here so I will probably check one of them out while I am here.
